Benadryl is a 1st generation antihistamine
zyrtec and claratin are both 2nd generation antihistamines.
So Benadryl is better.
Also, I find that Chlor-trimeton has excellent results like benadryl, without the sleepiness. It is also a 1st generation antihistamine.
 Hives is a serious symptom of allergic reactions-next step is breathing difficulty. So whatever gave you hives try to not take it again.

For severe allergic reactions: they give epinephrine and prednisone.
