What are some gluten/wheat free options for breakfast out?

Posted on January 12, 2010.

I’m going to breakfast at a little diner tomorrow with my friend, and I don’t know what to order! I would choose oatmeal, but its almost always contaminated in factories. I also want to know if there are any gluten free chinese food options, because we’re going tonight and I have no idea what to order since soy sauce has wheat in it! Help!

Your number one priority when eating out with a gluten intolerance is to do some research ahead of time. That includes the restaurant web site and/or calling and talking to the owner/manager. Call at a non busy time for them and ask if they have a gluten free menu, can handle making a meal gluten free and what their recommendation would be for a gluten free meal from them. You will learn a lot and be prepared. Listen and if they aren’t sure of themselves, be very cautious at that restaurant. Your next priority is telling the waitress that you need a gluten free meal. She should be helpful. Once again, if she doesn’t know what you are talking about, then be very careful. Eggs are the safest and if you are in doubt because of the waitress not being very confident, then order fried over light/medium or hard and that minimizes contamination. Then sliced tomatoes, fruit, etc.

As far as Chinese food, my only recommendation is that PF Changs has a gluten free menu and the lettuce wraps are wonderful off of it. They also have some gluten free sauces. Once again, research and talk to the waitress about what to get.

If I know that I am going to a restaurant that I am not familiar with, I try to eat a snack ahead of time so if nothing else, I can just drink something and order a small something.
