How do doctors test for food allergies on toddlers?

Posted on February 23, 2010.

Do they test children that young and if so how? My son seems to have an allergic reaction (not bad though) consisting of read splotches all over his face when he eats. I give him Benadryl as soon as I it. It seems to only happen when he eats Ranch Dressing and Cream cheese. Still can’t figure out the exact ingrediant though. Maybe you can. Thanks!!!
I meant as soon as i SEE it as far as giving him the Benadryl goes.

I worked in daycare and one of my children had allergies but the docs couldnt pin point it. It was when he was about 16 or 17 months they found a specialist who did skin testing to find out specifics on his allergies. At that point they had to re-do his diet. I would talk to your son’s pediatrician, ask for a refferal to an allergy specialist (preferably someone who deals with pediatric allergies).

Good Luck!

They will do a blood test for small children is called a RASP test but I am not sure what that stands for. My daughter does the same thing with ranch dressing. It is important to give the Benydril at the first sign of the reaction incase he has an anaphalactic (spelling?) reaction, and can’t breath. I am not sure what does it either, I just quit giving her ranch.

My 3 year old has nut allergies (severe with anaphylaxis) After a scary trip to the ER (didn’t know about the allergy at the time) we went to an allergist who did a scratch test on her back. Based on those results, a blood test was done 4 weeks later (to let the antibodies build up again) for the most extreme allergies. The bloodwork determined the severity of the allergies in question.

Get to an allergist and have him do the appropriate testing. Sounds like your son’s allergy may be dairy based. Find out about nuts too (if you don’t already know) as it is becoming quite common in toddlers. It’s better to find out this way. I now carry Benadryl and an EpiPen for my daughter.

Good luck.

If you figure out the ingredient, I would love to know. My daughter who is almost 2, also has a major skin reaction when she eats ranch dressing. Not all ranch dressing though…we’re okay with ranch from restaurants. Think I’ve linked it to bottled ranch and ranch in the packets from fast food places…Chik-fil-A’s ranch was horrible and she had bright red splotches on her chin and cheeks. Also, same reaction to Kraft Mac and Cheese on her face. I have gone to Annie’s (organic) mac and cheese and this hasn’t caused any type of reaction. I have a feeling the reaactions are related to the preservatives in these foods. Haven’t noticed a reaction to the cream cheese yet. Let me know what you find out! Thanks!
