If you have a dog with an allergy, choosing the right kind of treatment can be the difference between roaring success, and dismal failure. Of course, the first step is matching the type of dog allergy treatment to the type of allergy. Here is a breakdown of the types of allergy, and the recommended treatments.

If Your Dog Is Allergic to Inhalants It may sound strange, but, like humans, dogs can be allergic to inhalants, like dust, pollen, and certain types of mold. Treatment for this kind of allergy could include avoidance, particularly in the case of dust or mold, where you keep your pet away from areas where they are likely to come into contact with the allergen.

If the allergy has resulted in itching, as it is likely to do, using a topical treatment like a shampoo regularly will help. It’s also been proven that adding essential fatty acids to your dog’s diet is an efficient dog allergy treatment for inhalant allergic dogs too. More dramatic allergies may require anti histamines, steroids, or even immunotherapy may be required. Food Allergies Often very difficult to pinpoint, at least the dog allergy treatment for food allergies is simple – avoid the food stuff(s) the dog is allergic to. Place your dog on a hypoallergenic diet, or a home cooked diet with simple ingredients, and that should be the end of that. You could also use many of the treatments listed for the inhalant allergic dog above, however, those would be a temporary solution only, and as soon as the treatment stopped, the allergy would return.

Contact Allergies These are probably the least common dog allergies – this is when your dog becomes allergic to an item, like a particular type of blanket, or a plant, grass, or another item in his environment. Dog allergy treatment for contact allergies is much the same as for food allergies – temporary relief will be gained by using a standard treatment, but for long term relief, simply remove the allergen.

Flea Allergy Many dogs are allergic to fleas, and when bitten, they develop allergy symptoms. In this case, common dog allergy treatments may help, but the key is to keep the dog, and his environment, free from fleas.

Remember, for every one flea you see on your dog, there are a hundred more in the environment, and even one flea can drive an allergic dog crazy with biting and scratching! Bathing, dipping and collars are the first line of defense, but remember to regularly treat his kennel or environment too, as there may be many fleas lurking there too.

Whichever kind of allergy your dog has, finding an effective dog allergy treatment is crucial to his well being. If you’ve ever had hay fever or hives as an allergic reaction, you’ll know just how unpleasant suffering with an allergy can be. You wouldn’t want to grin and bear it, would you? You’d seek help. So do the same for your best friend – find him a dog allergy treatment that works.

With the allergy season in full swing, I thought I’d get some suggestions flowing for allergy medications. Please tell us what you have tried, what you currently use (if any), what’s worked and what hasn’t worked, and the good and bad things about each one.. If possible, give both a brand name and a chemical/generic name.

Claritin/Loratadine – doesn’t work at all for me, but it’s supposed to be non-drowsy. It’s dirt cheap, however – if it works for you you can get a 28-day supply at a dollar store for $1 and it’s the exact same thing – even the same manufacturer.

Airborne Seasonal Relief – tastes NASTY! Not good if you’re on the go, as it takes a while for it to dissolve. It worked a little bit when the allergens weren’t too bad, for example in early spring.

Chlortrimetron/Chlorpheniramine Maleate – this is my #1 choice, and what I currently use! The package says it may cause drowsiness, but I haven’t noticed that. It works fast too.
Nki – You really should give chlorpheniramine maleat a try, it worked wonders for me! It’s over the counter, it’s a little yellow pill. The Wal-Mart brand is called Chlortabs, and it’s about $2 for 100 tablets. I didn’t discover this until I started working at a vet clinic – it’s safe for dogs too! If you have trouble finding it, ask a pharmacist to help you. It comes in a bottle like Tylenol intead of in the foil blister packs like a lot of other allergy medication. It lasts 4-6 hours, but there is also an 8 mg extended-release that works for up to 12 hours, but I’ve only seen it in the name brand or in gigantic bottles the vet orders from the medical supply catalog. Good luck, I hope it works for you!
Also, I’ve heard a lot of good about Elderberry concentrate for allergies…anyone ever tried it, did it work?

This triggers a cascade of reactions that lead to allergy symptoms. In some people, mold allergy is linked to asthma and exposure causes restricted breathing and other airway symptoms. Mold allergy causes the same signs and symptoms that occur in other types of upper respiratory allergies. Mold allergy symptoms can include: Sneezing Runny or stuffy nose Cough and postnasal drip Itchy eyes, nose and throat Watery eyes Sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinuses Mold allergy symptoms vary from person to person, and range from mild to severe. One may have year-round symptoms or symptoms that flare up only during certain times of the year like from spring to late fall also when the weather is damp, or you’re in indoor or outdoor spaces that have high concentrations of mold. The mold season often peaks from July to late summer. In the warmest areas of the United States, however, molds thrive all year and can cause year-round (perennial) allergic problems. In addition, molds growing indoors can cause perennial allergic rhinitis even in the coldest climates.

If you have mold allergy and asthma, your asthma symptoms may be triggered by exposure to mold spores. In some people, exposure to certain molds can cause a severe asthma attack. Signs and symptoms of asthma include: Coughing Wheezing Shortness of breath There are thousands of types of molds yeast and spores. Since they are so small they evade the protective mechanisms of the nose and upper respiratory tract to reach the lungs. Molds are very common both inside and outside found wherever there is moisture, oxygen, and a source of the few other chemicals they need. Some of the most common molds that cause allergies include Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Mucor, Rhizopus, and Aureobasidium. If you have a mold allergy, the best defense is to reduce your exposure to the types of mold that cause your reaction.

Mold grows best at room temperature, and on many things, including tile, wood, paint, plaster, fabric, bathrooms and kitchens which contain adequate food and moisture also like closets, refrigerator drip trays, air conditioners, garbage pails, mattresses, pillows, attics, carpets, upholstery. In your home and basement, a musty smell will let you know that mold has set-up so all these needs to be freed from any moisture and cleaned regularly to reduce mold spores circulating in the air. If you have a stuffy nose, sneezing, watery eyes or other bothersome symptoms for longer than two weeks, see your doctor. If you have asthma or your doctor suspects you have asthma, you may need to see a doctor who specializes in allergies on inhaling tiny, airborne mold spores, your body recognizes them as foreign invaders and develops allergy-causing antibodies to fight them. While it isn’t always possible to avoid mold allergy triggers, medications can help keep mold allergy reactions under control. Similar to pollen counts, mold counts may suggest the types and relative quantities of fungi present at a certain time and place. For several reasons, however, these counts probably cannot be used as a constant guide for daily activities.

One reason is that the number and types of spores actually present in the mold count may have changed considerably in 24 hours because weather and spore dispersal are directly related. Many of the common allergenic molds are of the dry spore type – they release their spores during dry, windy weather. Other fungi need high humidity, fog, or dew to release their spores. Although rain washes many larger spores out of the air, it also causes some smaller spores to be shot into the air. In addition to the effect of day-to-day weather changes on mold counts, spore populations may also differ between day and night. Day favors dispersal by dry spore types and night favors wet spore types.

Contrary to popular belief, mold allergies are not very common. There are thousands of different types of mold out there. Of all these types, only a select few cause allergic responses.
Mold, also referred to as fungus, grows in practically any type of weather, both indoors and outdoors. Mold allergies do not usually have a defined season such as pollen allergy, although quite a few outdoor molds can be quite common during spring to late fall.
The best defence against asthma caused by mold allergies is to avoid airborne seeds that can be easily inhaled, which are known as mold spores. But avoiding a substance that is as widespread as mold can be difficult sometimes. But do not fret, there are many available medications that can relieve the symptoms of mold allergies.
Mold allergy symptoms are similar to the same signs and symptoms of other types of respiratory allergies.

Watery Eyes
Itchy eyes, nose and throat

Runny or stuffy nose
Cough and postnasal drip
Frequent sneezing
Skin rashes or hives
Inflammation of the sinuses

(Sinusitis)

In regard to some of the more mild symptoms, medical attention is not necessary, but if any of the symptoms seem to worsen over time then it is highly advised to see a doctor. A doctor can easily administer tests which will identify the cause of the allergic symptoms. A doctor can also provide you with prescription medication that is likely to help diminish your symptoms.
People who have mold allergies might experience allergy-related asthma, which may be serious during an asthma attack. Signs and symptoms of asthma include shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing.
The treatment and medication for mold allergy is similar to the treatment of other allergies. Many kinds of medications are available for asthma caused by mold allergy, such as inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators. For allergic rhinitis caused by mold allergy, there are antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays.

arnelsoriginals.com Call me at 805-322-6900 I got used to cooking gluten free meals but the one item I missed was good gluten free bread. The products out there were a sad excuse for bread, usually hard, dense, dry, and crumbly. Some companies got the taste right, but no one had a wholesome loaf with a good texture. And so I baked. Each week I my family gave me helpful suggestions and the next week, I started afresh. FINALLY, after eight years of baking bread, I am happy with the results. I …
